1 Lanzarote

The architect Fernando Higueras – who collaborated with Lanzarote’s most internationally famous artist, César Manrique – designed the imposing hotel that is now home to Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote. No wonder this latest opening by the Meliá brand has been awarded the National Architecture Award. Located in the stunning setting of Costa Teguise, its exquisite gastronomy is combined with design in restaurants such as La Graciosa, which features local cuisine. Each of its very spacious rooms boasts a terrace, and the pools and gardens are stunning.

2 London

The Meliá London Kensington encapsulates Britishness. The hotel – which establishes the Meliá Collection label in one of the English capital’s most central neighbourhoods – takes its inspiration from the wallpaper designs of William Morris, the 19th-century designer who reimagined flowers from traditional English gardens. Along with the plant and damask-style motifs on the walls, there are rich textiles such as Spitalfields silks. It’s all perfect for a painstakingly restored Victorian building that has retained the roominess and luminosity of all its spaces.

A plan: William Morris was consultant to what is now the V&A museum, where some rooms still display contain his original papers. It’s right next door, so be sure to drop in during your visit.

3 A Coruña

Noa Boutique Hotel won the World Luxury Hotel Award for the best Luxury Small Hotel for its exclusive offering in the unbeatable location of Oleiros Bay, opposite Santa Cruz Castle. The rooms incorporate natural materials in ample, bright spaces with huge windows overlooking the sea. There’s also a rooftop pool, where activities such as yoga are offered, as well as a restaurant, Olas, where you can enjoy the cuisine of Alejandro Ares.

4 Algarve

The enchanting landscape surrounding Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort (located on a cliff in the town of the same name) seems to enter through the property’s huge windows, which are perfectly integrated into the natural world of the Portuguese Algarve. The hotel boasts views of the Atlantic, an exquisite gastronomic offering and a luxury design that extends to every room.

5 Dominican Republic

Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus offers a five-star stay on the beachfront, opposite the idyllic white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Bayahibe next to Cotubanamá National Park. Its colonial architecture is set in gardens with palm palapas that contain common spaces, from speciality restaurants to the SPASensations, the gym and a diving centre. The hotel also offers many sea-related activities, such as kayaking, windsurfing and catamaran rides.
