Iberia starts to use sustainable aviation fuel on its engine test bench

In a pioneering initiative within Spain, Iberia is taking another step towards its commitment to the decarbonisation of air transport by starting to use sustainable aviation fuel at its facilities in La Muñoza.

Throughout the year, Iberia Mantenimiento will use five per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on its engine test bench in La Muñoza, near Adolfo Suárez Airport, Madrid-Barajas, which will save 115 tonnes of CO2. Cepsa is the company responsible for producing this second-generation biofuel from organic waste and used cooking oils in its La Rábida Energy Plant (Huelva).

Throughout 2024, the energy company will provide Iberia Mantenimiento with more than 36 tonnes of SAF, which is part of the airline’s plans to decarbonise the air sector. “We are very proud to have taken another step towards the decarbonisation of the sector with the use of SAF on our test bench, and to be able to prevent the emission of 115 tonnes of CO2,” explains Teresa Parejo, sustainability director at Iberia. “Collaboration, technology and innovation are elements essential to achieving the industry’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”
